Seattle MC Avery Turner (AKA First Black Prez)—one of the men injured in the Chop Suey shooting—is apparently conscious and talking with friends at Harborview.
Turner was shot in the chest during a hiphop show Sunday morning and was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Friends say Turner had been on a respirator since Sunday.
Another man, James Jones (known as Trama) was shot in the leg and shoulder. A third victim, Joseph Ryan—who performed under the name 29-E—was killed in the shooting.
A benefit show for the victims of the shooting is tentatively scheduled for next month.

A new night called Nasty’s (’sup with that apostrophe?) debuts at Capitol Hill bar Havana (1010 E Pike St) Jan. 21. Hosted by DJ Sean Cee, B-Boy Free (Circle of Fire), and DJ BlesOne (Massive Monkees, They Live), Nasty’s replaces the disco night Studio, which previously held down Wednesdays.
"I wanted to do a night that was just good hiphop, reggae, funk, soul," Sean Cee says. "I feel like there are so many nights that are mash-up/electro remixes/etc., so i just wanted to do a good ol' hiphop night. There are going to be B-boys and a different guest DJ every week, where the DJ can play whatever he wants."
I think it’s safe to say any venture featuring BlesOne will be worthwhile, based on what I’ve heard of his work solo, accompanying Massive Monkees, and with They Live—plus, the concept is solid.
Good luck, Nasty's.
I think… I’ve narrowed it down, at least. Ya'll had some great suggestions, and here's what’s currently in the running:
Maybe it's a three-song kind of year?
If you're in a death metal band and/or like bad art, your ship has come in. I predict sales will be concentrated in the Midwest.
Send an e-mail to lineout@thestranger.com with Tim and Eric Awesome Show in the subject line to enter. The show is Monday, January 13th, and it is all ages.
Read yesterday's post for the full scoop.

I can not wait to hear this album (even though I'm kind of anxious that it won't quite top the combined greatness of Deep Cuts and Silent Shout). (via Pitchfork)
Ultra-prolific beat scientist Madlib samples the main riff of Buzzcocks’ 1977 song “Boredom” on “The Get Over (Move)” from Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6 (Stones Throw, out Feb. 10). This is as weird and unexpected as Kanye sampling Can’s “Sing Swan Song” for “Drunk and Hot Girls.”
Will punk be the next genre to be plundered by hiphop producers? Perhaps, though prog and psych rock still haven’t been tapped out, not by a long shot.
"Hold Time" is the title track of Ward's upcoming album, which'll be out on Merge February 17th. It's a fitting soundtrack on a cold, damp, dark day like today.
(ht Pitchfork)
Now that we’re done pondering over what we loved in 2008, let’s join hands and salute the first batch of new releases that hit record store shelves today, January 6, 2009. It’s the least we can offer when we totally forget about them at the end of the year.

Animal Collective — Merriweather Post Pavilion
Domino (LP)
Okay, so maybe there is one album that won’t be forgotten about. With the internet internally frying itself out trying find a leak to Merriweather Post Pavilion and Pitchfork giving the album a fawning 9.6 review yesterday, I’m beginning to think that “Milk Nasty Fruit Punch Good” is all one would need to type to find any mention of the album. (Just you wait!) It’s just a shame I can’t join the choir and echo the glee - my short lead digital promo is still sitting in an inbox somewhere. Oh well.
Hearing the shitbit version on computer speakers is not the way to hear a band who is essentially interested in sound construction. The fact that the LP (with download card, naturally) comes out two weeks before the CD is a good indication that Animal Collective want to be heard first by people who actually care to chew before swallowing. Internet Fail, Records Prevail.

Glasvegas — Glasvegas
Columbia (CD/LP)
Speaking of internet failures: brand-spanking-new bands like Glasvegas that release their music digitally first in hopes of stirring up some buzz by the time the physical record comes out in shops domestically months later. What, then, has the buzz been about? Not their cringe-worthy band name. Instead, some acclaim (mostly from the UK) has been hoisted on the shoulders of the heavy-tongued Scottish band for their soaring dream-pop. Unfortunately, it’s uncomfortably average and completely forgettable. The average listener who likes this band now will find something better to latch onto before the next KEXP pledge drive — or after their January 10 performance at Chop Suey.

King Khan + BBQ Show “Animal Party” b/w "God of Raisins"
Fat Possum (7” single + coloring book)
Speaking of bands that played at Chop Suey not too long ago, how about a couple hot, greasy songs pressed onto a hot, greasy slab o’ wax, stuffed inside a coloring book? I think my box of crayons just melted.

High on Fire — Live From The Relapse Contamination Festival
Relapse (CD)
Speaking of melting, one should probably protect their face and ears before listening to this 8-song recording of High on Fire playing in Philly circa 2003! Not only is High on Fire one of the best live metal bands, they are a band who has an axe to grind and never goes dull. At the Relapse Contamination Festival, they pull out early merciless brooders like “Blood From Zion,” and pay homage to Venom with “Witching Hour.” Doom you all!
Bad news to start off the new year: The Stooges’ Ron Asheton found dead
Not dead yet: Grateful Dead reunion announced
Forty years later: Kraftwerk cofounder quits band
I hate the future: More music sold in 2008 than ever before, but fewer albums
Trent Reznor loves the future: NIN make another cryptic announcement
Fuck it, I’m going back to bed: Bob Marley collaborator Vincent Ford dead at 68
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Ron Asheton, guitarist for the Stooges, was found dead in his home early this morning. The authorities say they do not suspect foul play. Asheton was 60.
Damn. Now I'm really bummed I missed them at Bumbershoot 2005. Phooey.
I was, however, lucky enough to interview Ron circa the release of Todd Haynes' 1998 glam rock valentine Velvet Goldmine, where he was part of the faux-Stooges ensemble Wylde Rattz. The guitarist had this to say about the soundtrack's Iggy stand-in, and one of the biggest Stooges' fans in Seattle (or anywhere else):
"It was especially weird playing with Mark Arm. He does a pretty good Iggy imitation. When he started singing, it was a little creepy. I had to look in the vocal booth to see who was over there."
R.I.P. dude.
Have you seen Vince Mira yet? Because if you haven't, maybe tonight's your night. You know, if you're into watching immensely talented teenagers playing fun, old-timey, alt-country originals and Johnny Cash songs better than any Johnny Cash impersonator ever.
Mira plays the Can Can's "Sun Records Revival" night every Tuesday. Show starts at 7 pm, it's free ($10 for VIP tickets), and it's all-ages until 10 pm.
More of tonight's musical options can be found in our online calendar.
The identities of the three men who were shot at Chop Suey on Saturday have been confirmed, as Jonah reported earlier on Slog.

Best wishes to the two men who are recovering from their injuries, and my thoughts go out MC-29's friends and family.
From the Telegraph via Daily Swarm:
Mr Till, an expert in acoustics and music technology at Huddersfield University, West Yorks., believes the standing stones had the ideal acoustics to amplify a “repetitive trance rhythm”.The original Stonehenge probably had a “very pleasant, almost concert-like acoustic” that our ancestors slowly perfected over many generations
And there's a Washington connection:
The most exciting discoveries came when he and colleague Dr Bruno Fazenda visited a full-size concrete replica of Stonehenge, with all the original stones intact, which was built as a war memorial by American road builder Sam Hill at Maryhill in Washington state.Although the replica has not previously gained any attention from archaeologists studying the original site, it was ideal for Dr Till's work.
He said: "We were able to get some interesting results when we visited the replica by using computer-based acoustic analysis software, a 3D soundfield microphone, a dodecahedronic speaker, and a huge bass speaker from a PA company.
"By comparing results from paper calculations, computer simulations based on digital models, and results from the concrete Stonehenge copy, we were able to come up with some of these theories about the uses of Stonehenge.
"We have also been able to reproduce the sound of someone speaking or clapping in Stonehenge 5,000 years ago.
"The most interesting thing is we managed to get the whole space (at Maryhill) to resonate, almost like a wine glass will ring if you run a finger round it.
And finally, some footage of their research:
In the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Chop Suey Jan. 4, many eyes have been drawn to the 206Proof forum, a message board where Seattle’s hiphop community promotes itself and pontificates on issues related to the scene and hiphop in general. 206Proof is probably the best place to gauge what’s on the minds of members of this city’s hiphop producers, MCs, DJs, promoters, and fans.
Below is a selection of some pertinent observations from the 206Proof thread about the shooting and what its possible ramifications will be. All comments [sic].

“this shit has gotta stop”
People been sayin' that shit for 25+ years....it ain't NEVER gonna fuckin' stop. That's life, and if anybody thinks that this corny ass "Stop the Violence" shit is gonna stop anything, think again. Do like me....buy a bullet proof vest, some guns and try to avoid the shit as much as possible. I didn't go to the show tonight for a reason, because I had a bad feeling. I told Kountry [the show's promoter] the same thing earlier today and that he better be careful tonight.
djnphared:
Damn, all i can think about is the million times ive been in that hallway, and how thats where I always stand at shows, tonight was supposed to be the millionth and one, and probably coulda been my last, i would've been RIGHT THERE in the hallwayI made the right fucking decision tonight and I kinda feel guilty because someone else didn't make the same decision and paid the ultimate price for it, and another is hanging on to his life
M SEA:
I think i'm done with hardcore rap shows.
D-SANE:
All I know is that they got the story all twisted up over there on that SLOG bullshit. The Central District and SOUTH END are at war right now and have been for a while. But we all already knew that. Or did you think that all these Southcenter shootings and CD shootings were random? Nope. Get a clue idiots. This has nothing to do with the music and is just a random act of violence. If it would've happened in the Dick's parking lot....are you gonna blame it on Dick's cheesburgers???? GTFOHWTB
D-SANE:
I think Chop Suey will survive this, but they're probably gonna pull the plug on all Hip Hop related events for a while until the dust settles. I mean realistically, Chop has been in business for a long time and haven't had any major problems until now so the city has no grounds for that type of action. Damn shame...Chop Suey was a vital venue for our already fragile Hip Hop scene.
djnphared:
I regret that I will never be able to make peace with 29-E, I hope that Prez pulls through so I don't miss that opportunity a second time. Life is way too precious, and way too real sometimes. Cherish what you have, and live every moment like it's your last, and forget the petty differences you may have with the next man. Don't live with darkness around you, begrudging every little thing in life, it's not worth it, it's just not worth it.RIP
Mack Long:
Sounds like we're gonna have to turn this Stop the Violence show @ Studio 7 on Monday into a memorial.

I don't know what to make of this weekend's fatal shooting at Chop Suey either (except to say that it's always tragic when violence and death spill into the music scene). The night the shooting happened, I was down at the Comet for a show mourning and remembering John Spalding, who recently passed away from cancer at age 33. I was going to review the show (along with the Pharmacy's farewell to Seattle the previous night) in my column this week, but now I don't have much to say, and anyway that space is going toward more urgent matters. I was going to talk about the reunited Suffering and the Hideous Thieves' touching though Jesus-y hymns and Jeff Suffering's vague resemblance to Craig Finn (although with religion/god invoked as personal testimony rather than as narrative device). I was going to talk about missing a lot of that Pharmacy show because I was loving DJ WD4D's abstract hip hop set at Grey that night (FlyLo, Modeselektor, Oizo, Ratatat, etc). I was maybe going to talk slightly bigger picture about how so much of my favorite music deals with the existential dread of death, with worries and doubt about what if anything comes after. But all that shit seems really small now, and I just can't make much sense of any of this.
Here's wishing the best for all those affected by any of these deaths. RIP.

Post by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee; cross-posted at Slog

Three men in their twenties were shot at Chop Suey on Saturday night; one, local MC 29-E was killed, and another, 1st Black Prez, is in critical condition at Harborview.
According to a witness, someone opened up the side door at Chop Suey, opened fire and fled. Police arrested three people in connection with the shooting. Two, an eighteen-year-old and a 25-year-old, remain in custody.
Several hip-hop acts were scheduled to perform at Chop Suey , including Young Soprano, Fatal Lucciano, No Clue, Dividenz and Anonimous. A witness says Young Soprano was performing when the shooting happened.
One of the show's promoters said he'd been urged to cancel the event because of the possibility of a gang-related conflict.
"There were rumors circulating about the show and people told me not to put it on," the promoter says. "Some of these people are from down south and some of them are from the Central District." Schatzer says one of tonight's performers even brought their own security.
The promoter says he heard 5 or 6 shots in the back of the club near the bathrooms and saw the show's host, 1st Black Prez, get hit in the chest.
SPD's homicide and gang detectives are investigating.
In light of the horrible shooting at the Young Soprano/Fatal Lucciauno/etc. gig at Chop Suey Jan. 4, perhaps people could use a refresher course on how to chill.
The concept: Before and after each performer’s set at a gig where the music is generally aggressive (gangsta rap, hardcore punk, death metal, power electronics, etc.), a DJ (preferably one with vast knowledge of beatless music and experience in chillout tents at raves) should play the most tranquil tracks imaginable, be they ambient, new age, spiritual jazz, space rock, minimalist composition, loved-up reggae/dub, etc. Such pacific sounds ideally would ease the room’s tension and perhaps diminish the toxic machismo that tends to flare up when shit-stirring musicians commandeer the stage.
Below are some examples of the music I think would engender peaceful atmospheres at such events. Of course, there is the danger that such unaggressive music could backfire and have the exact opposite affect, but I think this approach should at least be considered as one possible way to instill positive vibrations. (I'm not being flippant; I'm searching for a heretofore untested way to treat a recurring problem.)
Brian Eno, “An Ending (Ascent)”
The Orb, “A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld”
Steve Hillage, “Garden of Paradise”
Terry Riley, “A Rainbow in Curved Air”
Fripp & Eno, “Evening Star”
Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin, “A Love Supreme”
